1994-presentDress watch

The Lange 1 debuted in 1994 with the modern company's first collection, and its off-center, overlapping dial layout and outsize date made it one of the most recognized watches of its era.

The Lange 1 is the watch that announced Lange's return. It places the hours, small seconds, outsize date and power reserve so that none of them quite touch, a layout drawn from the golden ratio, and it has stayed close to its original shape for three decades. Owning one well comes down to two things: setting the date correctly and choosing a watchmaker who respects the movement.

How the outsize date works

Lange's outsize date uses two separate discs, one for the tens and one for the units, shown side by side in a double window. The result reads like a printed number rather than a small date wheel, and it became a Lange signature. It's also a mechanism with more parts than a typical date, so it needs to be set according to the manual.

The short version: avoid adjusting the date in the hours around midnight while the change is in progress, and use the dedicated pusher rather than forcing anything. If the date stops changing cleanly, take it to a watchmaker before it gets worse.

Servicing a Lange 1

A Lange 1 service means full disassembly of a German silver movement, cleaning, lubrication and regulation, plus inspection of the outsize date and power reserve works. The plate and engraved balance cock need careful handling, and any mark left during the job is permanent. Factory service is the norm, and for good reason.

Variants like the Lange 1 Time Zone, the Moon Phase and the Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar add more complexity. The more complicated the variant, the more firmly you should lean toward the brand.

Buying a pre-owned Lange 1

There are many Lange 1 references across case metals, dials and generations, so confirm exactly which one you're buying and that the movement matches. Check the outsize date by advancing it through a full cycle under supervision, and look at the dial around the date windows for marks.

Ask for the full set and the service history. Have a specialist check the German silver plate and balance cock for signs of careless earlier service, since that kind of damage can't be undone.

Which Lange 1 do you have?

The Lange 1 isn't one watch. The original layout has stayed close to its 1994 form, but the family now includes the smaller Little Lange 1, the Lange 1 Time Zone with a second city ring, the Moon Phase, the Daymatic with an automatic movement and a mirrored dial layout, and highly complicated pieces like the Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar. A later generation of the core model also introduced a newer manufacture movement with an instantaneous outsize date.

Knowing which one you own changes the service conversation. A manual-wind Lange 1 needs daily winding and a careful hand with the date. The Daymatic winds itself but still uses the outsize date mechanism. The Time Zone adds a second hour hand and a city disc that have to be set in the right order. Write the reference down before you call a watchmaker, and ask whether they have worked on that exact variant rather than Langes in general.

Wearing a Lange 1 every day

Plenty of owners wear a Lange 1 daily, and the watch copes well if you respect its limits. Keep it away from water beyond hand washing, wind it at the same time each day, and take it off for sport or heavy work. The precious-metal cases mark more easily than steel, so a small scratch on the lugs is part of wearing one rather than a reason for polishing.

Have accuracy and water resistance checked every couple of years between full services. It's a quick, inexpensive visit, and it catches a worn gasket or a magnetized hairspring before either turns into a bigger repair.

Common questions

When did the Lange 1 come out?

It was presented in 1994 as part of the first collection after the company was refounded.

How do I set the outsize date safely?

Use the dedicated pusher and avoid the hours around midnight while the date is changing. Follow the manual for your reference.

Is the Lange 1 water resistant?

Modestly. It's a dress watch, so keep it dry and check the rating for your reference.

Who should service a Lange 1?

The brand, in most cases, or an independent with Lange training and genuine parts. Complicated variants should go to the brand.
