Since 2011In-house dress watch

The Vingt-8 family, introduced in 2011, is built on Voutilainen's in-house 28 caliber with two escape wheels and a direct-impulse escapement.

The Vingt-8 is the watch that shows what Voutilainen's workshop builds from scratch. The 28 caliber, unveiled in 2011, uses two escape wheels and a direct-impulse escapement, and the 28SC of 2020 added central seconds to the same platform. Owners and buyers need to know how the escapement works, what the workshop asks of a watchmaker, and which checks matter before buying a used example. This guide covers those points.

The 28 caliber and the Vingt-8 family

Voutilainen unveiled the Vingt-8 in 2011, and it introduced the in-house 28 caliber with it. Voutilainen describes the movement as a direct-impulse design with two escape wheels, a large balance and extensive hand finishing. The name is the one most owners use for the family, though the watches differ in dial and display.

The direct-impulse escapement is the core of the design. Two escape wheels deliver energy straight to the balance, so the escapement works differently from the lever escapement most watchmakers learn on, and the watch rewards a close look at the movement.

The Vingt-8 Hisui won a GPHG Artistic Crafts prize in 2014, and the family has collected several awards since. Awards describe the watch's standing but not its condition, so use the prize list as background rather than as a guarantee of quality.

The 28SC and central seconds

The 28SC, introduced in 2020, moves the seconds hand to the center. The mechanism uses an intermediate wheel on the third-wheel arbor to drive the central hand, and a stop-seconds function lets the owner set the time precisely. The movement runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour.

The case of the 28SC measures 38.5 mm across and 13.3 mm thick, and the movement is 30 mm across. Those proportions make it a substantial watch for its diameter, so check the fit on your wrist before you assume it will sit like a slim dress piece. The 28SC won the men's watch prize at the 2020 GPHG.

Central seconds runs the seconds hand through a different part of the gear train, so a service on the 28SC asks more of the watchmaker. Ask how the seconds train is checked, and whether the stop-seconds function is tested after reassembly.

Servicing the 28 caliber

The direct-impulse escapement needs a watchmaker who understands how the impulse is delivered. The escape wheel teeth and the impulse jewel should be inspected for wear, and the adjustments should be checked without disturbing the balance. A shop that treats it as a conventional lever escapement will miss the point of the design.

The workshop's policy is that it is the only authorized place for after-sale service. The brand says it offers complete servicing and warranty extension on request, and it names its Swiss workshop as the destination for service. If you are planning a service, ask the workshop for intake instructions and an estimate before you ship the watch.

Hand finishing matters on any service. The bridges, screws and steel parts should be returned to the finish they had before the work, and the balance should be checked for free movement. Ask for photographs of the movement before and after, so you can see the result.

Buying a pre-owned Vingt-8

Start with the reference, the serial number and the papers, and match them to the watch and the caseback. Ask for the original invoice and any workshop service record. A Vingt-8 with a clear workshop history is easier to value and to insure than one with unexplained gaps.

Inspect the movement, if the seller allows it. Look at the escape wheels and the balance, and check the bridges and screws for even finishing. Tool marks on the edges or screws can mean the watch has been worked on by someone else, and those marks should be photographed and explained.

Ask for a written inspection by a watchmaker who knows the 28 caliber, and agree in advance what happens if the inspection finds an undisclosed repair. A proper purchase lets you walk away if the watch is not what the seller described.

Care and wear

Wear the watch with the care you would give any high-finish dress piece. Avoid knocks, keep the crown and gaskets in good condition, and have the seals checked on the schedule the workshop recommends. Water resistance is a feature to confirm at service rather than assume.

Keep the escapement area clean. Dust and oils can build up where the escapement is visible, and it is best left to the workshop to clean the movement rather than to a general jeweler. Ask the workshop what cleaning, if any, it recommends between services.

Keep the service record with the papers. A dated list of work done, with the workshop's name and any parts replaced, is the best way to show the watch's history to a future owner or a new watchmaker.
