Presage is Seiko's dress-watch line, known for dials made with Japanese craft techniques such as enamel, Urushi lacquer and Arita porcelain alongside its Cocktail Time designs.

Presage is where Seiko shows off dial craftsmanship. The line includes watches with enamel, Urushi lacquer and Arita porcelain dials, along with the colorful Cocktail Time models. The movements are usually Seiko's widely serviced automatic calibers, but those dials are the part that needs a careful watchmaker.

Why the dial is the delicate part

Enamel, lacquer and porcelain dials are beautiful and fragile. They can chip or crack if dropped or handled carelessly during service, and they're hard or impossible to repair once damaged. A good watchmaker will remove and refit the dial and hands with particular care and protect the dial during the movement service.

Ask before booking whether the shop has handled these dial types before, and whether a damaged dial would be replaceable for your reference.

Servicing the movement

Most Presage models use Seiko automatic calibers that independents service routinely, often quickly and at fair cost. As with other mid-range Seikos, a shop may offer a movement replacement instead of an overhaul; that's reasonable on these watches if the dial is handled carefully either way.

Presage watches are dress pieces, typically with modest water resistance, so avoid swimming with them and have the seals checked at service.

Buying a Presage pre-owned

Check the dial closely for chips, hairline cracks or crazing, especially around the edges and hand posts, since dial damage is the main condition issue. Confirm that the dial and hands match the reference, and ask whether the watch has been serviced and by whom.

Original boxes and papers help resale, and limited editions with special dials are worth more when complete.
