Brand Guides / Baume & Mercier

Baume & Mercier's story starts in the Swiss Jura in 1830, and the Geneva name came later. The house is known for the Clifton, the Riviera and the Hampton, and for the Baumatic movement family. In July 2026 the Italian Damiani Group completed its purchase of the brand from Richemont, so the service network, warranty and parts routes are in a period of change. Owners should check the current terms before they send anything, and ask for them in writing.
The business dates to 1830 in Les Bois, in the Swiss Jura. Traditional accounts credit the brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume, while the brand's own history says the family business was opened in 1830 and registered in 1834. The Baume & Mercier name came later. William Baume partnered with the businessman Paul Mercier in 1918, and the brand's official history dates the Geneva company to 1920.
Richemont joined in 1988 and held the brand for almost four decades. Damiani, the Italian jewelry group, completed its purchase of 100 percent of Baume & Mercier on July 1, 2026. Damiani has said it will use its distribution network and open some standalone boutiques. Richemont continues to provide operational services for at least twelve months after closing, so the transition is staged rather than instant.
The Clifton, Riviera and Hampton collections have different ages and different movements, and that split matters for anyone buying or servicing one. A Hampton and a Clifton with a Baumatic caliber can both be serviced by the same shop, but they are different jobs, and the watchmaker should know which one they are looking at before quoting.
The product story runs on a few families. The Riviera appeared in 1973, a steel sport-chic watch with a 12-sided bezel designed by Jean-Claude Gueit. Hampton arrived in 1994, Capeland in 1998 and Clifton in 2013. The Clifton Baumatic, introduced in 2018, gave the brand a five-day automatic movement, and later Baumatic calibers have appeared in selected Riviera and Clifton models. Those dates are launch dates, not the age of the watches, which matters when you look at the vintage market.
Baume & Mercier's North American service runs through a designated repair centre for complicated and vintage watches. The brand's US pages say you can take a watch to an authorized retailer or contact the repair centre directly, and a shipping kit is available on request. Those are the official routes, but the terms for direct repairs differ from the terms for orders placed through a retailer, so ask which set applies before you send anything.
A Clifton or Riviera with a Baumatic movement can be serviced by a capable independent, but the movement is a group-developed caliber rather than a common base, so parts access is the question to settle first. The Baumatic family was developed with Richemont's manufacturing and research teams, and that is a good reason to ask for genuine parts and to check how the watchmaker sources them. For a watch in warranty, the brand's route is the simpler one.
Under the direct service terms, repairs normally wait for your acceptance of an estimate, and a fee applies if you decline it and ask for the watch back unrepaired. A battery change can proceed without a separate estimate if diagnosis shows that is all the watch needs. Given the ownership change, ask the repair centre to confirm in writing that service terms and parts supply haven't shifted during the Damiani transition. A watch in warranty should go through the official channel. A watch out of warranty can go to a specialist who has worked on the Baumatic family and can show it, with a written estimate in hand before any work begins.
The brand recommends a complete service every three to five years for most watches, and every five to seven years for Baumatic models, depending on use and environment. A watch worn daily or kept in a humid place will sit at the shorter end. The interval depends on the movement, not just the collection name, so check the reference before you plan the schedule.
Water resistance gets its own annual check, because the brand says water resistance isn't guaranteed permanently. A pressure test is a small job next to a movement overhaul, and it catches a failing gasket before it becomes a dial or movement problem. The complete service also includes new gaskets, cleaning of the case and bracelet, lubrication and final checks, and some exterior replacement parts are charged separately.
If the watch loses time, the crown feels wrong or condensation appears under the crystal, don't wait for the calendar. Those are signs that a seal or the movement needs attention, and a quick diagnosis now can save a larger bill later.
Baume & Mercier sits in the accessible-luxury part of the market, and its popular designs are copied. The fakes that look right in photos often give themselves away at the movement, the dial printing or the bracelet clasp. Ask for the box, the warranty card and any service papers, and insist on an inspection that opens the caseback before money changes hands.
Check the bracelet and clasp closely, because they wear quickly on the Clifton and Riviera. Stretched links, a worn clasp and replaced pins add cost fast. Look for softened edges on the case, since a watch that has been polished too often loses its shape and some of its value. Ask for the service history, and whether the watch has ever been opened by anyone outside the brand's network.
Warranty status counts too. New watches from authorized retailers carry a 24-month warranty, and eligible Clifton and Riviera Baumatic watches can extend to eight years if the owner registers within 60 days of purchase. That extension depends on registration, so ask whether the seller registered it. If it wasn't registered, the extension is probably gone, and the price should reflect that.
Start by sorting the work. A Clifton with a Baumatic movement is a movement job for a watchmaker who knows the caliber and its parts supply. A Riviera's bracelet is a separate job, and a vintage Riviera with a refinished dial is a judgment call that needs a written agreement before work begins. Check the movement reference before deciding who should handle a Hampton or Capeland, since the caliber, not the collection, decides the job.
Ask for a written estimate that separates movement, gaskets, bracelet and polishing. Confirm whether the bracelet will be polished or only cleaned, and whether the shop will return the old parts. If the work is a retailer order rather than a direct repair, ask which terms apply, because the answer can change who pays for shipping and what happens if you decline the estimate.

The Riviera, launched in 1973 with a twelve-sided bezel designed by Jean-Claude Gueit, is Baume & Mercier's steel sport-chic line, and its 2021 fifth generation includes Baumatic models with a five-day reserve.
Clifton, introduced in 2013 as a classical dress watch, has a Baumatic branch from 2018 that owners ask about by caliber, and the BM12-1975A and BM13-1975A are different movements within it.

Often, yes, but ask first whether they can get genuine parts for the caliber. A watch still under warranty should go through the brand.
