Brand Guides / Bell & Ross

Bell & Ross is built on one visual idea: a round instrument dial inside a square case, borrowed from aircraft cockpits. Bruno Belamich and Carlos A. Rosillo founded the company, and the brand dates its founding to 1994. The BR 01, launched in 2005, made the square case the brand's signature. The company is headquartered in Paris, and its watches are assembled and adjusted in La Chaux-de-Fonds, so owners are dealing with a French brand that is made in Switzerland.
Belamich brought industrial design to the partnership and Rosillo brought the business side, and both had an interest in aviation. Their stated goal was watches that could cope with professional use in hard conditions. Aircraft instrument panels gave them the round dial set into a square case, and the motto 'From the cockpit to the wrist' says the rest. That origin story explains why the case proportions matter so much on these watches: the square outline is the point, so any change to it is noticed immediately.
The BR 01 arrived in 2005 and became the design people recognize. Chanel took a minority stake in the late 1990s, which helped the brand set up its own production in La Chaux-de-Fonds, so the Swiss base is long established rather than an afterthought.
The BR 01 family grew from there. The Big Date, referenced as BR 01-96, carries a large calendar window in a 46 mm square case. Bell & Ross changes case and movement details between generations, so a shop should confirm the exact reference and year before anyone assumes the numbers.
Bell & Ross is open about working with outside movement makers. Its FAQ names Sellita and ETA among its suppliers and lists specialist partners such as Dubois-Dépraz, MHC, Vincent Calabrese and Technotime, with the supplier depending on the model. The watches are described as Swiss Made, with assembly and adjustment at the company's production unit in La Chaux-de-Fonds. That is a clear, honest arrangement, and it means the movement is rarely the mystery part of a Bell & Ross.
The caliber names are where owners get confused. The BR 01-92 manual identifies its movement as BR-CAL.302, but a BR-CAL designation on its own doesn't tell you who made the base. Don't assume an ETA or Sellita base until you've confirmed it from the reference, the production year and the movement itself. A specialist who can name the base movement, and the parts that go with it, is a far better sign than one who says it's a Bell & Ross movement and stops there. If the movement number doesn't match the paperwork, raise it before any work starts.
Bell & Ross tells owners to use its service centers or an approved watchmaker, and its warranty terms warn that unauthorized work can void coverage. If your watch is under warranty, that settles it. Go through the brand or an approved retailer, and keep every piece of paperwork.
Out of warranty, the choice is more practical. A watchmaker who already works on the same base movement can usually service it, and many owners find a local shop gives a clearer quote and more say over which parts get replaced. The catch is the case. Crisp, angular cases show every scratch, and a careless polish can soften the edges that make the design work. Ask how the case will be handled, and whether polishing is included in the quote or billed separately.
Water resistance is worth testing on any watch that sees water. Ask for a pressure test after gasket work or a crystal change, and keep the result in writing. A short note with the test pressure and the date is far more useful later than a verbal assurance. Ask for the dial and hands to be photographed before the case is opened, so any changes can be checked later.
A distinctive shape attracts copies, and Bell & Ross's square case is easy to recognize, which makes it easy to fake from a distance. Buy from a seller who will let an independent examine the watch. Start with the case. Sharp, consistent lines and matching screws are a good sign. Soft edges, mismatched screws or a bezel that feels loose are reasons to walk away, no matter how the rest of the watch looks in photos.
The dial and hands come next. Check the lume, the alignment of the date window and the finish on the indices. Refinished dials are common in older watches, and a refinish changes the value even when it looks good. Ask the seller what is original, and get the answer in writing so there's a record if something turns out differently.
Ask for the box, the papers and any service invoices. A recent service from a known shop, with the movement reference listed, tells you more than a warranty card alone. If the seller has no history at all, price the watch as if you'll be paying for a full service right away, because you probably will be.
Ask which Bell & Ross references the shop has worked on, and how they identify the movement. A good answer names the base caliber, the parts it takes and whether those parts are available. If the answer is vague, plan on a longer job and a bigger surprise on the invoice.
Choose a shop that will put the estimate in writing, separating movement, case and strap, and that will return the old parts when you ask. Straps and bezel components can make up a surprising share of a job on a sports watch, so an estimate that lumps everything together doesn't tell you much. Ask how they'll handle a part that has to be ordered, and how they'll keep you informed while it's on the bench.
If you're buying, bring the watch to someone who can check it before you pay. A specialist who has seen the BR 01 many times will know the proportions, the finish and the common wear points without needing a reference book in front of them. That experience is what you're paying for, and it's worth asking about directly.

Launched in 2005, the BR 01 put a round dial inside a 46 millimetre square case, modeled on aircraft cockpit instruments, and it became the design most people link with Bell & Ross.
The BR 03 launched in 2006 as the smaller sibling of the BR 01. Bell & Ross calls its case a round within a square, a shape that suits wrists that find the 46 millimetre BR 01 too large.

Often, once the warranty no longer matters. Confirm which movement is inside first, then ask how the shop would source parts, since the brand directs owners to its own service centers and approved watchmakers.
It's a Bell & Ross caliber designation, such as BR-CAL.302 in the BR 01-92 manual. It doesn't by itself say who made the base movement, so check the reference and supplier before assuming one.
