The vintage Tri-Compax and Gérald Genta's Polerouter, revived in 2026

Universal Genève was founded on January 18, 1894, by Numa Descombes and Ulysse Perret, and the company's first address was in Le Locle. The Tri-Compax and the Gérald Genta-designed Polerouter made its name. After a 1989 sale to Stelux and a December 2023 deal that put it with Breitling, the brand returned with the Polerouter and Compax in April 2026. For owners, the useful question is less about the past than about which movement is inside and where its parts come from.

Le Locle in 1894, the Tri-Compax and the Polerouter

Universal Genève was founded on January 18, 1894, and the brand's own history says it was first registered on the Rue du Collège in Le Locle under the name Universal Watch. The name says Geneva, but the company started in the Jura. Its founders were Numa Descombes and Ulysse Perret. The history that collectors care about starts with the 1940s.

The Tri-Compax arrived in 1944, for the company's fiftieth year. It combined a chronograph with a full calendar and a moonphase, and the brand says it soon became its best-selling watch. The Polerouter followed in 1954. Gérald Genta designed it while still early in his career, and it was supplied to crew members of Scandinavian Airlines as the official timepiece. The original's twisted lugs and crosshair detailing are still the points people recognize first.

The Tri-Compax and the Polerouter are different watches with different jobs. One is a complicated chronograph, the other a distinctive sports watch built around Genta's design. Vintage examples of each need different kinds of attention, which matters once you start looking at pre-owned pieces. The Tri-Compax's calendar and moonphase add adjustments that a simple time-and-date watch never needs, so the bill for that work should reflect it.

The quiet years, the Breitling deal and the 2026 relaunch

The brand's own timeline moves from the 1989 sale to Stelux to a new factory in Biel in 1993, which was set up to mark the company's centenary. A Compax reissue followed in 1994, and then the brand went quiet for a long stretch before a new line appeared in 2019. The Polerouter's 70th anniversary was marked in November 2024 with three one-off tribute watches built on refurbished vintage UG 1-69 movements.

In December 2023 Breitling agreed to buy Universal Genève from Stelux. Breitling's owners, the investment firms Partners Group and CVC Capital Partners, are behind that deal. Universal Genève is presented as a separate brand with its own collections, not a Breitling sub-line. Keep that in mind if a seller describes a watch as a Breitling product, because the two brands have different histories and different movements.

The full collection returned on April 8, 2026, with the Polerouter in eleven variants and the Compax in six. The revived Compax includes a 'Nina Rindt' panda configuration among its vintage-inspired and colored-dial versions.

What is inside the 2026 watches

The Polerouter uses the UG-110, an automatic micro-rotor movement with roughly 72 hours of power reserve, a 4 Hz beat rate and a thickness of 3.8 mm. The Compax uses the UG-200, an automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch, also around 72 hours of reserve and a 4 Hz beat. Those are the brand's published figures for the relaunch, and they're the right starting point for any service conversation.

Who makes them is the more useful question. In a post-launch interview, Georges Kern said the UG-110 is made by Le Temps Manufacture in Fleurier. He said the UG-200 is produced by Breitling Chronométrie, drawing on an existing Breitling technological platform, but with about 90 percent of its components developed for this caliber. These are proprietary Universal Genève calibers made through specialist and group partners, rather than movements from a standalone factory. Public sources don't show a Universal Genève factory in Biel building these movements, so don't assume one.

For a servicing shop, that means young calibers. There's little independent track record yet, so ask any shop what access it has to parts and documentation for the UG-110 and UG-200 before you book. A shop that says it can handle a new caliber should be able to tell you how it got the service information.

Servicing a Universal Genève: brand first, then the specialist

Within warranty, go through Universal Genève or its authorized route. The new calibers are recent, so brand-approved parts and service are the safest path. Warranty terms depend on your country and purchase date, so check them before you send the watch out.

Vintage pieces are where an independent earns their keep. A Tri-Compax has a calendar and a moonphase that need careful setting and checking after service, and a watchmaker who knows complication work will confirm they're aligned before they hand the watch back. Ask whether they've worked on moonphase mechanisms before, since the disc and its alignment can be fiddly. Vintage Polerouters need the same care on the case and bracelet. Ask how the shop sources parts for vintage calibers and whether they can fit correct replacements rather than near matches.

Ask for a written estimate that separates the movement, the case and the bracelet or strap, and ask whether a timing check and a calendar check are included. A good watchmaker won't mind the questions, and the answers tell you how much work the shop has done on complications.

Buying Universal Genève: pre-owned checks and choosing a shop

New Universal Genève watches are sold through the brand's channels, and that is the safest purchase. Pre-owned, check the papers and the reference number against the model and year. Be cautious of tribute pieces or refurbished watches sold as originals. The 2024 tribute watches used refurbished vintage movements, which is a reminder that the source of a movement matters as much as its appearance.

On a vintage Tri-Compax or Polerouter, check whether the calendar and moonphase work and whether the watch sets cleanly. Ask whether the dial is original and whether the case has been refinished, since a refinish changes the value even when it looks right. Ask for an inspection before you pay, and ask the inspector to write down what they checked and what they didn't. Ask the seller for daylight photos of the calendar window and the moonphase disc, since listing photos can hide a lot.

When you choose a specialist, look for someone who handles chronographs and complications, and who can name the movement, its supplier and the parts situation. Vague answers usually mean a longer wait and a bigger bill. A confident shop will tell you what they can do, what they'd send out and what they'd rather not touch.

What to look for in a Universal Genève specialist

  • Experience with chronograph and calendar complications
  • Clear answers on parts access for the UG-110 and UG-200
  • A pre-purchase inspection that covers calendar and moonphase function
  • Written estimates that separate movement, case and bracelet

Numa Descombes and Ulysse Perret, who founded the company in Le Locle on January 18, 1894, under the name Universal Watch.

What is the Tri-Compax?

It's a 1944 chronograph with a full calendar and a moonphase, made for the company's fiftieth year. The brand says it became its best-selling watch.

Is Universal Genève part of Breitling?

Not as a brand. Breitling agreed to buy Universal Genève from Stelux in December 2023. The two share investment owners, but Universal Genève is presented as a separate brand with its own collections.

What movement is in the Polerouter?

The 2026 Polerouter uses the UG-110 automatic movement, with roughly 72 hours of power reserve. The 2024 tribute pieces used refurbished vintage UG 1-69 movements instead.

Is the Compax the same watch as the Tri-Compax?

No. The Compax is the revived chronograph built on the UG-200. The Tri-Compax is a separate historical watch with a full calendar and a moonphase.
